I would wish that education would focus on the integrative aspects of design, construction and operations. There used to be the mentality about college that you went to college to “learn to learn”. The best of the universities didn’t teach you facts, or technologies, or even history other than as mind expanders to help you tune your learning muscles.<\/p>\n
I think education now and the practice of architecture, building and operations is too focused on the opportunities of the moment. We want the silver bullet, the answer, the system, the fix for all that ails us. But the real thing that needs to be taught in school, and constantly refreshed in practice is the ability to engage others, seek and identify co-benefits and co-burdens, and the eagerness to do better work than we did yesterday. This may even involve doing something new, or learning from others yet again.<\/p>\n
Teach that, and all will be well (or at least a damn site better).<\/p>\n
