{"id":249,"date":"2015-04-05T19:11:12","date_gmt":"2015-04-05T19:11:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/2bgreener.com\/?p=249"},"modified":"2015-04-05T19:11:12","modified_gmt":"2015-04-05T19:11:12","slug":"the-greening-power-of-game-night","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/2bgreener.com\/?p=249","title":{"rendered":"The greening power of game night."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are so many aspects to sustainability, from small, personal actions such as vowing to not use plastic straws (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecocycle.org\/bestrawfree\/faqs\">single use straw FAQs<\/a>), to larger and more prominent approaches such as building a LEED rated building (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usgbc.org\/leed\">info on LEED<\/a>).\u00a0 Another piece not often discussed is the community side of greening. \u00a0There are so many activities and events that can support a strong fabric of interdependence, resilience and creativity.<\/p>\n<p>So with that broad, world changing tone, here I am to talk about\u2026game night.\u00a0 Yes, game night.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_253\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/2bgreener.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_8193.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-253\" class=\"wp-image-253\" src=\"https:\/\/2bgreener.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_8193-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Friends and fam playing Pandemic, \" width=\"215\" height=\"161\" srcset=\"https:\/\/2bgreener.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_8193-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/2bgreener.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_8193-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/2bgreener.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_8193.jpg 1632w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 215px) 100vw, 215px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-253\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Friends joining us to play Pandemic: a collaborative game in which all players work together to save the world.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Our family of three enjoys Wednesday game night nearly every week, and several full-day or weekend gametimes usually during holidays or long weekends.\u00a0 We play Settlers of Catan in many of its formations (the final argument that won me over, thank goodness, to having a child was having a guaranteed third to play Settlers!).\u00a0 We play Uno and Parcheesi, Carcassonne, Empire Builder, Pandemic\u2026basically any game and many of them. I\u2019m not a fan of Monopoly (collective, gasp, I know) or Risk, but I\u2019ll even play those occasionally.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_251\" style=\"width: 191px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/2bgreener.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_7795.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-251\" class=\"wp-image-251 \" src=\"https:\/\/2bgreener.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_7795-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_7795\" width=\"181\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/2bgreener.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_7795-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/2bgreener.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_7795-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/2bgreener.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_7795.jpg 1224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 181px) 100vw, 181px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-251\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Empire Builder &#8211; Erik is seriously focused.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Why do I say that game night is a sustainable choice? It has kept us from parking our butts in front of the TV.\u00a0 It has introduced us to the neighborhood as in the summer we tend to play out on the front porch and we chat with those walking by.\u00a0 It has helped us to laugh, to tease, to listen, to learn how to get over losing and to win with a little grace, though we each tend to have our good days and bad days with those last two skills. It has made our family stronger and more connected.\u00a0 I suspect this connection will not only last through Erik\u2019s teenage years but will also give us the groundwork and the time\/place to talk through some of the tough issues that are sure to come up as he enters public high school.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_252\" style=\"width: 239px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/2bgreener.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_7892.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-252\" class=\"wp-image-252\" src=\"https:\/\/2bgreener.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_7892-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Parcheesi - an old and seemingly simple game, with some interesting strategy.\" width=\"229\" height=\"172\" srcset=\"https:\/\/2bgreener.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_7892-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/2bgreener.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_7892-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/2bgreener.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_7892.jpg 1632w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 229px) 100vw, 229px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-252\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Parcheesi &#8211; an old and seemingly simple game, with some interesting strategy. Erik is, at this point, losing.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I may have mentioned before that I try to assess sustainability by asking #whatifeveryonedidit, and this certainly helps me to understand the greening power of game night.\u00a0 What if every family or apartment full of co-renters unplugged for one night and played a game?\u00a0 What if we all played games that challenged our spelling or math or logic skills, or our trading and communication or even our silliness?\u00a0 What if we spent one evening a week (or even a month) just hanging out with friends of all ages, without focusing on pick-ups, what we are wearing or spending money out for food, drink and entertainment?
